PROVIDENCE, RI – Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, Rhode Island Gold Star Families, the Rhode Island National Guard, the Rhode Island Office of Veterans Services, and state officials today laid wreaths at the Garden of Heroes in honor of Rhode Island military members who lost their lives in service of our country. This year's ceremony included an invocation by Gold Star Father Richard August and remarks by Gold Star Mother Sharon Serio-Valente.

“The Garden of Heroes is a solemn monument to the steep price of our freedoms. Its place on the State House lawn is a constant reminder to our state that we must honor the sacrifices of our service members by cherishing and protecting our veterans and military families,” said Lieutenant Governor Matos. “I am grateful to all those who volunteer to maintain the Garden of Heroes and who joined our Gold Star Families in remembrance of their lost loved ones today.”

"The Garden of Heroes solemnly reminds us of the sacrifices Rhode Islanders defending our country have made so that we may live the lives we do every day," said Governor Dan McKee. "These brave men and women embody the spirit of Rhode Island and our nation and we owe them our eternal thanks and gratitude. We also recognize the families of our fallen heroes and the support and love they have given their sons, daughters, and loved ones."

The Garden of Heroes was dedicated in 2005 and is managed by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Each May, the Lieutenant Governor holds a memorial wreath laying ceremony to honor Rhode Island service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country since September 11, 2001.

“Each year, it is an honor to join Gold Star Families, the Lieutenant Governor, the Office of Veterans Services, Rhode Island veterans, and so many others for the Garden of Heroes wreath laying ceremony,” said Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore. “Rhode Islanders have served our country honorably throughout our history, and we have a responsibility to pay special tribute to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery and service is never forgotten.”

“On behalf of myself and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, I couldn’t be any prouder than to stand with these Gold Star parents, our attending dignitaries, guests and dedicated supporters," said Director of Veterans Services Kasim Yarn. "Events such as today’s underscore the immense sacrifices that have been made by those that served and the loved ones that carry on their promise of freedom."
